Connecting to the Internet

1. Modem Connect Problems to the Internet
Line noise plays a major problem when attempting to connect to the internet. Electric fence noise will in most cases mean that connection will be intermittant or impossible.
2. Modem wont stay connected to the Internet
Once again line noise or poor line quality is the major cause of problems when connecting to the internet Do You Lose your Connection to the Internet? The problem could be that your modem has been inundated with too much data. In Windows 9#, go Start/Settings/Control Panel and open Modems. On the Modem Properties dialogue box's General tab, your modem should be highlighted; click Properties and the Maximum Speed drop-down list, select the next lower setting. This may slow your modem down but it will keep you from dropping out of the internet connection. Then click the Connection tab and take the same approach with Port Settings button. Drag the slider on each of the two bars back a notch and see if that fixes the problem
3. The Modem Wizard can't detect my modem. What do I do?
Some modems aren't easily detectable. You will need to choose your modem manually from a list. If the modem brand and model are not in the list, first click on Hayes Compatible in the Manufacturer list, then click a modem with your modem's speed in the Model list. If this still doesn't work, rerun the Setup Wizard again, this time selecting Other Windows Modem from the Manufacturer list and a model with your modem's speed from the Model list.
Sometimes the Modem Wizard detects a modem other than your manufacturer's - this happens because different modem manufacturers often use the same chips and the Wizard detects the chip rather than the modem.

4. After I click on the dial-up connection, I get the message "No Dialtone".
This means your modem has not been able to make contact with a telephone line.Check the physical connection of your cables from the computer to the modem (if the modem is external) and from the modem or computer to the telephone wall outlet

5. The dialer makes the right noises but it doesn't actually connect me. What could be the cause of this?
  • Check that you have the correct telephone number in the dialer box. It should read.
  • Check call waiting - if you have call waiting on your phone, disable it first by preceding the dialup number with *52. This will turn call waiting off for the duration of your connection.
  • Check for any dial-out prefixes - if you are dialing from work, you may need to precede the number with a 1 or a 9 for an outside line. If you are dialing from home, make sure the preceding numbers are not there. Also make sure there is no 91 preceding the number. This is the CWC extension to dial out and may have been inadvertantly left in upon the return of your computer.
  • Check your username - Make sure all lettters are in the correct case. A common mistake is caps lock on.
  • Check your password - make sure you are typing zero's and letter o's correctly. Clear the password box and retype the password carefully again checking caps lock.

When you change plans from hourly to flat rate you may need to change phone numbers. Your old number may read 203 9150 or 0867 12000. This may also be preceeded by a dialout prefix or a comma. This must remain in the dial out. You need to change your dialout number to 087 303305 in the dialup networking properties by doing the following:
  • In Win95 or 98 Double click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double click on the Dialup Networking icon to bring up a window with two icons.

2. How can I tell if a message has been delivered?
Provided your mail has been correctly addressed, the system will deliver it to the intended recipient's mail server. If there is a problem on the net causing the message to remain undelivered for 4 hours, you will receive notification. If after 7 days of trying to get through, and it still can't get delivered, your message will be returned to you. As a general rule, if you hear nothing back, you can assume the message has reached its destination.

3. Can I download all my mail messages, then read them off-line?
Yes, you can. Simply dial in to ISPNZ, and in your Mail program (Outlook), click on Get Mail or the Send/receive button. Any messages waiting for you are downloaded to your hard disk. Now you can disconnect and continue reading your mail. You may get error messages about not being connected to a server, but you can ignore these. If you wish to reply to any mail messages, remember to set the deferred delivery option, then send your messages when you dial up later.

Internet Explorer Questions

1. What is browsing?
Browsing is the term used to describe how you view Web sites on the Internet. You can browse Internet sites in much the same way you would browse through a library of books. Instead of using your feet to go from bookshelf to bookshelf, browsing the Internet is done using a Web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer to go from Web page to Web page. Browsing is also called surfing.

2. What is a hypertext link?
A hypertext link or hyperlink is a piece of a Web page which is a link to another page on the net (though hyperlinks can also point to different areas on the same page too). 4. What are search engines?
A search engine is a program designed to search out and list hyperlinks to Web pages. Because there are literally tens of millions of webpages on the Internet, it's not always a straightforward task to find information easily. Search engine Web pages help to bring some order to the chaos of the Internet by providing a means of finding and listing Web pages. Most search engines are similar in design in that all you do is type in the word/s you want information about and in a matter of seconds the search engine will give you a list of Web pages where the word/s you typed in get mentioned. There are hundreds of different search engines but we recomend Google or Altavista for speed and accuracy of results. Click here to try Google.

General Browsing

1. How Do I Type In A Web Address?
From the main Explorer window look for an Address bar at the top of the window. This is where you can type in the address of a web page you would like to surf to. Delete any address that's in the address bar and type in the new web page address and click the ENTER key on your keyboard to process the command.

Web page addresses normally start with the prefix http:// You DON#78217; have to type in this prefix most of the time, so that IE sees http://www.ispnz.co.nz and www.ispnz.co.nz as the same address. If you get an error saying that the server could not be located check to see that you are connected to the internet. You will see a connection icon if you are, like the one below in the lower right part of your screen.
